Bengaluru Palace

About this place

Bengaluru Palace is a Tudor-style palace with turrets, battlements and manicured grounds, giving a European-castle feel in the middle of the city. Visitors walk through ornamental halls, painted ceilings, old photographs and royal memorabilia. The large open grounds around the palace are often used for concerts and events, so the complex combines heritage interiors with a modern outdoor event space.

History & highlights

The palace was begun in the late 19th century by the Wodeyar royal family of Mysore as a smaller residence and administrative centre closer to the emerging British cantonment in Bengaluru. The architecture was influenced by English country houses seen by the royals during their travels. After Independence, portions of the property continued under the royal family’s control, while the city expanded around it. The palace has since become a heritage attraction, symbolising the period when Bengaluru grew from a military cantonment and princely outpost into a major metropolis.
