Betla National Park

About this place

Betla National Park, near Medininagar (Daltonganj), is one of India’s earlier tiger reserves, with forests, grasslands, small hills and rivers. Visitors can take jeep safaris, stay in forest lodges and explore watchtowers, spotting deer, bison, monkeys, peacocks and, more rarely, big cats. The presence of old forts and watch posts inside the park adds a historical flavour to the wildlife experience.

History & highlights

Betla was among the first areas brought under Project Tiger in the 1970s, though even earlier it had been a reserved forest and hunting ground under local rulers and the colonial state. The name “Betla” itself is derived from local village names. Over time, the park became the most recognisable wildlife brand of Jharkhand, symbolising the state’s forest wealth. Conservation challenges remain, but Betla continues to represent the wild side of Jharkhand in tourism promotion.
