Bhangarh Fort (Alwar District)

Bhangarh Fort (Alwar District)

About this place

Bhangarh Fort is a dramatic ruin at the foot of green Aravalli hills, with a massive fort wall wrapping around the remains of palaces, temples and an old bazaar street. Walking in from the main gate you pass through abandoned shopfronts and courtyards before reaching the inner citadel and hill-side palace ruins. The setting is beautiful rather than spooky – trees, birds, hills and old stone everywhere – but it is widely marketed as “India’s most haunted fort”, adding extra curiosity for visitors. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the site and famously posts a board advising people not to remain in the area after sunset.

History & highlights

The fort town of Bhangarh lies on the Jaipur–Alwar route, about 50 km from Sariska. It was built in the 17th century by Raja Madho Singh, younger brother of the Mughal general Man Singh of Amber, and became a small but thriving town with reportedly over 9,000 houses at its peak. By around 1720, Bhangarh began to decline and was gradually abandoned, for reasons historians attribute to shifting trade routes, political changes and possibly famine or earthquakes. Folklore adds extra spice with stories of a tantric’s curse and a doomed princess, which fuel its “haunted” reputation today.
