Bhojpur Shiv Temple. On a low hill 30 km from Bhopal, Bhojpur has a partly finished but gigantic stone temple dedicated to Shiva, often called the Somnath of the East. The sanctum houses one of India’s largest lingams cut from a single rock, resting on a massive square yoni. The open platform, huge pillars and views over the Betwa valley create a very powerful, raw atmosphere – especially at sunrise or during Mahashivratri.
About this place
History & highlights
The temple is associated with Raja Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty (11th century), whose capital was nearby Dhar. Inscriptions and unfinished architectural elements suggest that the grand complex was never fully completed, possibly due to political or natural reasons. Even in its incomplete form, Bhojpur shows advanced medieval engineering and has become a key heritage stop on the Bhopal–Sanchi tourist circuit.
