Bhujodi Craft Village (near Bhuj)

About this place

Bhujodi Craft Village is a weavers’ village about 8–10 km from Bhuj, famous for its handwoven shawls, stoles, blankets and traditional textiles made by Vankar weaving families. Lanes are lined with homes that double as workshops and showrooms, where you can watch weaving on pit looms, learn about natural dyes and motifs, and buy directly from artisans. Many households have generations-old ties to pastoral communities, and their textiles reflect this heritage in both technique and design. In recent years, several co-operatives and craft studios have opened here, offering curated collections, demonstrations and sometimes short workshops for visitors. For Ghoomein, Bhujodi is the best place to spotlight “meet the artisan, understand the craft” experiences near Bhuj.

History & highlights

Historically, Bhujodi’s Vankar community wove shawls and blankets for Maldhari pastoralists and other local groups, exchanging textiles for livestock products and grain. As Kutch crafts gained national attention in the late 20th century, Bhujodi emerged as a key weaving centre, supported by design interventions, NGOs and government craft boards. The 2001 earthquake disrupted life and infrastructure, but also brought renewed focus and buyer support to artisan livelihoods. Today, Bhujodi is firmly established on Kutch’s craft tourism map, balancing traditional orders with urban and international markets while keeping many classic patterns alive.
