Bolgatty Palace and Island

Bolgatty Palace and Island

About this place

Bolgatty Palace and Island stands on a lush island just off the Kochi mainland, surrounded by backwaters and greenery. The building, now a heritage hotel, features long verandas, wooden staircases and lawns overlooking the water. The island also has a golf course and viewpoints towards the harbour and city skyline, making it a charming blend of colonial architecture and resort-like surroundings.

History & highlights

The palace was originally built in the 18th century by the Dutch as the residence of the Dutch governor. When the British took control of Kochi, they used Bolgatty as the seat for their Resident overseeing Cochin and Travancore. Its island location offered security and pleasant climate. After Independence, the property passed to the state and was eventually converted into a hotel and resort area. Bolgatty’s history thus tracks the shift from Dutch to British colonial administration and then to postcolonial heritage tourism.
