Brahma Sarovar

Brahma Sarovar

About this place

Brahma Sarovar is a massive sacred water tank in Kurukshetra, surrounded by ghats, temples, and a wide stone promenade. The rectangular lake (around 1.1 km long) is used for holy dips, evening aarti, and grand Deep Daan during Gita Jayanti, when thousands of diyas light up the water. Walkways, chhatris, and the central Krishna–Arjuna chariot sculpture create a powerful spiritual and visual experience for pilgrims and tourists alike.

History & highlights

According to tradition, this is the site where Lord Brahma performed a yajna and began the creation of the universe, which is why the tank is considered one of the holiest in Kurukshetra. Ancient texts and local legends link the area to Mahabharata events, including Yudhishthira’s post-war rituals. Over time, various rulers and devotees improved the ghats, added temples and shrines, and today Brahma Sarovar is central to solar-eclipse baths, Gita Jayanti celebrations, and ongoing conservation by state tourism authorities.
