The site’s first cathedral church in Shillong dates to early Catholic missionary presence; the earlier wooden structure was destroyed by a fire in April 1936. Construction of the present church began in October 1936, designed with earthquake-prone conditions in mind. It remains a central historic symbol of Christianity’s growth in the Khasi Hills.
