Chalal Village and Riverside Forest Trail

Chalal Village and Riverside Forest Trail

About this place

Chalal Village is a small village about 30 minutes’ walk from Kasol, reached by crossing a suspension bridge over the Parvati River and following a forest path. The trail passes through tall pines and riverside rocks, with cafés and guest houses slowly appearing as you approach the village. Chalal is quieter than Kasol, with traditional Himachali homes, small orchards and a few stay options – many travellers choose it for a slightly more peaceful base while still being close to Kasol’s cafés and buses. At night, the river sound and forest atmosphere give Chalal a very different mood from the main village.

History & highlights

Historically, Chalal was simply another Parvati valley farming village, connected to neighbouring hamlets by footpaths and mule tracks, with people relying on agriculture, livestock and small-scale trade. Tourism arrived here after Kasol got popular; as travellers began looking for more “offbeat” places nearby, the easy walk and scenic riverside made Chalal an obvious extension. Over time some traditional houses were converted into guest houses or cafés, and festivals/psy-trance parties also started happening in and around the village, bringing both income and cultural tensions. Recent incidents, including tourists going missing near the river, have underlined safety and environmental issues on this route, and there is growing talk of more regulated tourism.
