About this place
History & highlights
Chanderi’s strategic location on ancient trade routes between Malwa, Bundelkhand and central India made it an important town from early times. It was ruled at different periods by Rajputs, Delhi Sultans, Malwa Sultans and the Mughals, and later came under Scindia–Gwalior influence. Each era added monuments—fort gates, mosques like Jama Masjid, palaces and temples. The weaving tradition of Chanderi sarees grew alongside, supported by royal and mercantile patronage. In recent decades, the town has gained recognition both for its handloom heritage and for its preserved medieval urban fabric, often used as a backdrop in films and documentaries.
