Charminar

Charminar

About this place

An iconic four-minaret monument in the heart of the old city, famous for its Indo-Islamic architecture, arched façades, and the lively bazaars that surround it. It’s not just a photo-spot—Charminar anchors the historic city core, where markets, traditional crafts, street food, and everyday life blend into a single “heritage street” experience.

History & highlights

Built in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah after founding Hyderabad, Charminar became the city’s symbolic centerpiece. Multiple accounts link its construction to commemorating the end of a plague and/or marking a major moment in Islamic chronology; over centuries it remained both a civic landmark and a religious site (with a mosque on the upper level).
