Chennakeshava Temple, Belur

About this place

Chennakeshava Temple at Belur is celebrated for its ornate stone work and elegant proportions. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Chennakeshava), it features intricately carved pillars, bracket figures of celestial maidens (madanikas), detailed friezes and richly decorated doorways. The temple complex also has smaller shrines and a tall gateway, and daily worship continues, giving it a living-temple atmosphere.

History & highlights

Belur was an early Hoysala capital, and King Vishnuvardhana commissioned the Chennakeshava Temple in the 12th century, partly to celebrate military victories and royal devotion to Vaishnavism. Built in soapstone with extraordinary detail, it marked a major shift in south Indian temple style. Over centuries, various dynasties made additions and repairs. Today, Belur and Halebid together are iconic examples of Hoysala art, central to Hassan district’s tourism identity.
