Cherai Beach (Vypin Island)

About this place

Cherai Beach is a long, relatively gentle beach on Vypin Island, where the sea meets a narrow strip of land with backwaters behind. It’s popular for swimming (in season), dolphin-spotting at times, and relaxed stays in resorts and homestays along the shore. Coconut palms, village roads and paddy fields nearby give it a semi-rural, peaceful feel compared to busier urban beaches.

History & highlights

Vypin Island grew by natural sedimentation and later embankment works, with fishing villages and coconut groves dominating its landscape. Cherai’s beach was long used by locals but was not a major tourist destination until roads and bridges improved access from Kochi. In recent decades, as Kerala promoted coastal tourism, Cherai emerged as Kochi’s “own” beach option, with resorts and restaurants catering to both city dwellers and domestic tourists, while traditional fishing continues alongside tourism.
