Chilmiri Neck Viewpoint

About this place

Chilmiri Neck is one of Chakrata’s highest and most famous viewpoints, a flat grassy ridge about 5 km from the main town. From here, visitors get sweeping 180° views of the Garhwal Himalaya – peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Rohini and sometimes Kedarnath–Chaukhamba on clear days. The ridge is surrounded by deodar forest and is popular for sunsets, birdwatching, short walks and star-gazing, often described as Chakrata’s “natural balcony” over the Yamuna valley.

History & highlights

Chilmiri Neck’s importance comes less from built structures and more from its geographical position – it juts out as a natural viewing gallery above the surrounding valleys. Old forest and cantonment records mention this ridge primarily as part of the deodar belt and a lookout for watching forest fires or weather, while local people used nearby slopes for grazing. With the rise of hill tourism, travellers discovered it as a quiet alternative to crowded viewpoints in bigger hill stations, and blogs began calling it the “hidden paradise” of Chakrata. Today it anchors many itineraries: sunrise/sunset at Chilmiri, trek to Tiger Falls or Deoban, and back to Chakrata bazaar, blending simple village walks with iconic Himalayan panoramas.
