Christ Church

Christ Church

About this place

Kasauli is a small, quiet cantonment hill town wrapped in pine forests and gentle hills. Its compact Mall Road has old shops, bakeries, cafés and viewpoints, giving a quaint old-world charm. In the middle stands Christ Church, built in stone with a tall spire, stained-glass windows and pointed Gothic arches, surrounded by tall deodars. Evenings here are calm – army families, locals and tourists stroll along the Mall, enjoying the cool air and the sense of stepping back into another era.

History & highlights

Kasauli developed as a British cantonment and hill resort in the mid-19th century, chosen for its climate and position on the lower Shivaliks. Christ Church, consecrated in the 1850s, is considered one of the oldest churches in Himachal Pradesh and is a clear symbol of early British presence. Around it, the cantonment layout, parade grounds and bungalows were built to house soldiers and officers. After Independence, much of Kasauli remained under defence control, which restricted random construction and preserved its colonial character. Today, this combination of heritage church, military history and slow, regulated growth makes Kasauli attractive to travellers looking for a peaceful and nostalgic hill experience.
