Christ Church stands just off the Mall near Library end and is one of Mussoorie’s most beautiful heritage buildings. Built in Gothic Revival style, it features pointed arches, stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Jesus, wooden pews, a tall spire and a peaceful churchyard with deodar trees.

The interior is quiet and cool, a strong contrast to the noise outside on the Mall. Visitors—irrespective of religion—often step in to sit for a few minutes, appreciate the stained glass and soak in the atmosphere of an old Himalayan church. At Christmas and Easter, the church hosts special services that draw locals, school students and tourists.

History & highlights

Christ Church is widely considered the oldest church in the Himalayan region, with its foundation dating to 1836, built by and for the small British community that had made Mussoorie their home.
It began as an Anglican church (Church of England) funded by private donations of British residents. Over time, as political boundaries changed, the parish moved through different administrative structures: first into the Church of India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon, and finally, in 1970, into the Church of North India (CNI).
The building has survived multiple episodes of harsh mountain weather and changing town dynamics, and today stands as one of the clearest architectural reminders of Mussoorie’s colonial era—so much so that many travel pieces list it among the top “must-see” heritage spots in the Queen of Hills.
