Dal Lake is the postcard image of Srinagar – a vast urban lake ringed by mountains, willow trees and old neighbourhoods. Shikaras (ornate boats) glide on still water, floating markets sell flowers and vegetables, and traditional wooden houseboats offer unique stays. In winter the lake can partially freeze, while in summer and autumn it becomes the centre of tourism, photography and local life.

The lake has existed naturally for centuries, fed by mountain streams and channels from the Jhelum. During the Mughal period, Srinagar’s rulers beautified the lakefront with gardens and canals. The British, who were not allowed to purchase land in princely Kashmir, popularised houseboats in the 19th century as their semi-permanent homes on the water. Over time, Dal Lake became the visual symbol of Kashmir tourism and has featured in countless films and travel writings.
