Dimna Lake

Dimna Lake

About this place

Dimna Lake lies on the outskirts of Jamshedpur, backed by wooded hills and open sky. It is actually a large reservoir with clear water, boating facilities and picnic spots along the shore. The reflection of the nearby Dalma Hills and the calm atmosphere make it a favourite weekend outing place for families, photography enthusiasts and morning walkers, especially in winter and early summer.

History & highlights

Dimna Lake was built as a water supply reservoir for Jamshedpur, created by Tata Steel as part of its township infrastructure. Constructed in the mid-20th century, the dam and lake were designed to provide reliable drinking water for a growing industrial city. Over time, as roads improved and tree plantation around the lake increased, it also evolved into a major recreational spot, showing how an engineering project for utility gradually gained a second life as a scenic tourist attraction.
