Dodital Lake (Dodi Tal)

Dodital Lake (Dodi Tal)

About this place

Dodital Lake is a serene freshwater lake set amid thick oak, pine and rhododendron forest at about 3,000 m. Reached by a trek from Sangam Chatti or Agoda, the lake has crystal-green water ringed by trees and a small temple at one end. The atmosphere is extremely peaceful: mist rising off the water, fish creating gentle ripples, and mountain ridges peeking between tall trees. Many trekkers camp on the meadows beside the lake and then continue to Darwa Pass for higher views, but some simply stay here to fish, birdwatch or sit quietly by the shore.

History & highlights

Dodital is also known as “Dhundital” or “Ganesha-ka-Tal”, because Hindu mythology identifies it as the birthplace of Lord Ganesha. It is said that Ganesha chose this lake as his abode, and a small temple to him still stands on the bank, alongside a Shiva shrine. Historically the lake was mainly a high pasture and water source for local people; it only became widely known once trekking routes were mapped. As outdoor tourism grew, Dodital–Darwa Pass became one of the classic moderate treks of Uttarkashi, introducing visitors to the legends of Ganesha and to lesser-known valleys of the district. Conservation efforts now focus on keeping camping regulated so that the lake’s clear waters and forest surroundings are preserved.
