Dr. Ramnath A. Podar Haveli Museum .This is one of the best-restored havelis in Shekhawati, right in Nawalgarh town. From the street you see a richly painted gateway with arches and niches; inside are multiple courtyards ringed by frescoed walls, wooden balconies and carved doors. The rooms hold curated galleries on Rajasthani festivals, wedding customs, costumes, musical instruments, puppets and more. Around 750 frescoes decorate the haveli, carefully cleaned, so visitors can see fine details and bright colours that are often lost in abandoned mansions
About this place
History & highlights
The Podar Haveli was originally built by the wealthy Podar merchant family in the 19th–early 20th century as a residence and status symbol. Like many Marwari families, the Podars later shifted business to Mumbai; in 1955 the family moved out and in 1966 Dr Ramnath A. Podar converted the haveli into a school, in line with the family’s educational trust. Later it was further developed as a museum of Shekhawati culture and painting, preserving frescoes and adding interpretive displays. Today it is showcased by Rajasthan Tourism as a model of how a private haveli can be conserved and reused for heritage education.
