Elysee Palace (now MGN School)

About this place

Elysee Palace is a notable Indo-French style building in Kapurthala. Its elegant façade, arches and symmetry resemble European mansions, and the structure now houses MGN School. Even in school use, its distinctive architecture makes it a frequently photographed landmark and an important part of any heritage walk in Kapurthala.

History & highlights

Built in 1962 by Kanwar Bikram Singh in an Indo-French style, Elysee Palace reflects the continued European architectural influence in Kapurthala even after the princely state’s heyday. Later conversion into an educational institution helped preserve the building instead of letting it fall into disrepair. Today it tells the story of Kapurthala’s transition from royal capital to modern district town, while still proudly displaying its cosmopolitan architectural heritage.
