Fateh Sagar Lake

Fateh Sagar Lake

About this place

Fateh Sagar Lake  is another large blue lake embraced by low hills, giving Udaipur part of its “second Kashmir” nickname. A road runs along much of its edge (Paal, Rani Road), where people come for walks, cycling and street food in the evenings. The lake contains three islands – one is Nehru Park with gardens and a café, one has a public park and fountain, and the third hosts the Udaipur Solar Observatory. From the shore you see boats crossing the water, lights reflected at night, and the outline of Monsoon Palace high on the hill, making it one of the city’s favourite leisure spots.

History & highlights

Fateh Sagar was first constructed as an artificial lake in 1678 by Maharana Jai Singh, but the original earthen bund was washed away by floods during the reign of Maharana Bhim Singh. Later, in the late 19th century, Maharana Fateh Singh rebuilt and enlarged the dam, and the lake was renamed in his honour. The lake became part of a linked system of water bodies around Udaipur (along with Pichola, Udai Sagar and Jaisamand), used for drinking water, irrigation and now recreation. In recent decades, environmental groups like the Udaipur Lake Conservation Society have pushed for desilting, sewage control and ecological restoration, recognising Fateh Sagar’s role in groundwater recharge, local climate, livelihoods and tourism.
