Fatehpur Sikri Fort And Palace

Fatehpur Sikri Fort And Palace

About this place

Fatehpur Sikri Fort & Palace is a remarkably well-preserved walled city built in red sandstone, located a short drive from Agra. Visitors enter through grand gateways like the Buland Darwaza and explore royal palaces, audience halls, courtyards, gardens, and the Jama Masjid with the shrine of Sufi saint Salim Chishti. The architectural style combines Persian elegance with Indian craftsmanship: jali screens, carved pillars, chhatris, and carefully planned courtyards create a harmonious royal environment that feels frozen in time.

History & highlights

The city was founded in the late 16th century by Mughal emperor Akbar, who briefly shifted his capital from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri after the birth of his heir, following the blessings of Salim Chishti. Construction of palaces, administrative buildings and religious structures took place rapidly, and for some years it functioned as the heart of the empire. However, issues like water scarcity and strategic concerns led to its abandonment as a capital within a few decades, and the court moved back to Agra and later to Lahore. Because it was left largely intact and not continuously redeveloped, Fatehpur Sikri today stands as a rare, complete example of a planned Mughal capital and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
