Firoz Shah Palace Complex

Firoz Shah Palace Complex

About this place

The Firoz Shah Palace Complex is a large medieval fort-palace in the heart of Hisar, with massive stone walls, gateways, courtyards and underground rooms. Inside the complex are structures like the Lat ki Masjid, a mosque that incorporates an Ashokan pillar segment, and the Jahaj Kothi building. Today it is an archaeological site open to visitors, giving a strong feel of 14th-century Indo-Islamic architecture.

History & highlights

Built in 1354 CE by Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq, the complex formed the nucleus of a new fortified town called Hisar-i-Firuza. Stone was transported from the Mahendragarh hills and a moat was dug around the walls for defence. Over time the town expanded beyond the fort, but the palace, mosque, and Ashokan pillar (brought from a different site) remained as key monuments. Declared a centrally protected monument, the complex has undergone conservation by the Archaeological Survey of India since the early 20th century and is now a major heritage attraction in western Haryana.
