Girnar Hill And Girnar Ropeway

Girnar Hill And Girnar Ropeway

About this place

Girnar Hill is a dramatic granite hill massif just outside Junagadh, sacred to both Jains and Hindus. Long flights of steps climb past old gateways and small shrines to major temples like the Jain temples of Neminath, the Ambaji (Ambika) temple and the Dattatreya peak, with panoramic views across forested slopes and plains. For visitors who can’t manage all 10,000+ steps, the Girnar Ropeway (Asia’s longest passenger ropeway) now glides over the lower slopes, carrying you to the Ambaji temple zone in under 10 minutes, with stunning aerial views the whole way. For Ghoomein, this is Junagadh’s top “spiritual trek + ropeway ride + sunrise/sunset” combo.

History & highlights

Girnar has been a revered tirtha for many centuries; Jain texts record it as the place where the 22nd Tirthankar Lord Neminath attained omniscience and later nirvana, while Hindu tradition links it to Dattatreya and Ambaji. Inscriptions at its base include Ashoka’s rock edicts (c. 250 BCE) and later Rudradaman and Skandagupta inscriptions. The modern Girnar Ropeway project was first proposed in 1983 and finally inaugurated in October 2020, spanning about 2.3 km, now promoted as Asia’s longest ropeway.
