Howrah Bridge

About this place

The iconic steel bridge over the Hooghly River is one of the strongest symbols of Kolkata–Howrah, famous for its dramatic engineering and nonstop energy—vehicles, pedestrians, city lights, and river views. Visiting at sunrise or night gives a classic “Kolkata postcard” experience.

History & highlights

Commissioned/opened in 1943 (originally called the New Howrah Bridge), it replaced an earlier pontoon bridge and became a critical lifeline for trade, commuting, and rail connectivity via Howrah Junction. Later officially named Rabindra Setu, it remains among the world’s busiest cantilever bridges and a defining landmark of Bengal’s 20th-century urban growth.
