Hoysaleswara Temple, Halebid

About this place

Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebid is one of India’s finest stone-carved temples. Dedicated to Shiva, it stands on a star-shaped platform with almost every inch of its outer walls packed with friezes of gods, dancers, scenes from epics and delicate patterns. Inside are pillared halls, shrines and sculptures that show the peak of Hoysala craftsmanship, making it a must-visit art heritage site.

History & highlights

Halebid (ancient Dwarasamudra) was once the capital of the Hoysala Empire (12th–13th centuries). Hoysaleswara Temple was commissioned by Hoysala rulers as a grand Shaivite shrine, rivalled only by their temples at Belur and Somanathapura. Invasions in the 14th century damaged the city and ended Hoysala power, leaving Halebid partly ruined. The temple, although never fully completed, survived as a masterpiece of Hoysala sculpture and architecture, now under archaeological protection.
