Jagatjit Palace

About this place

Jagatjit Palace is a grand palace in Kapurthala that once served as the residence of Maharaja Jagatjit Singh. Designed in an opulent European style with domes, colonnades and landscaped lawns, it reflects why Kapurthala was called the “Mini Paris of Punjab.” Although now used by an educational institution and government, its exterior remains a major visual highlight for visitors exploring the city’s royal past.

History & highlights

Built in the early 20th century during Maharaja Jagatjit Singh’s reign, the palace was designed by French architect Maurice Mantout, who also created the Moorish Mosque in the city. The building’s French and European influences mirrored the Maharaja’s cosmopolitan tastes and his close connection with European high society. After Integration, the palace transitioned to administrative/educational use, but it continues to symbolise Kapurthala’s unique princely identity and architectural experimentation.
