Jetavana Monastery

Jetavana Monastery

About this place

Jetavana Monastery in Shravasti is a peaceful archaeological and pilgrimage site featuring remains of ancient monasteries, meditation halls and stupas set among trees and lawns. It is considered one of the most important Buddhist monastic complexes, and many pilgrims meditate here or sit under trees associated with the Buddha’s presence. Modern shrines and monasteries built by different Buddhist countries stand near the ancient ruins, creating an international, spiritual atmosphere.

History & highlights

According to Buddhist texts, the wealthy merchant Anathapindika purchased a grove in Shravasti from Prince Jeta at a high price in order to donate it to the Buddha and his sangha, creating the Jetavana monastery. The Buddha is said to have spent more rainy seasons here than at any other place, delivering numerous sermons. Over centuries, Jetavana grew into a major centre for learning and practice. With the decline of Buddhism in India, the site was abandoned and buried, but archaeological work in the 19th–20th centuries unearthed its remains. Today it is once again an active pilgrimage spot and an important stop on the Buddhist circuit.
