Jog Falls

About this place

Jog Falls, on the Sharavathi River, is one of India’s tallest and most dramatic waterfalls. Four main cascades—Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket—plunge down a nearly vertical cliff into a deep gorge, creating mist clouds and roaring sound in monsoon. Viewpoints, steps and a lower-level trail offer multiple angles; in full flow it looks wild and raw, while in lean season the rock formations are clearly visible.

History & highlights

Jog Falls was historically known locally as Gerosoppa Falls, part of the thickly forested Malnad region. The British popularised it as a hill-station excursion spot in the 19th–20th centuries, building viewpoints and rest houses. Construction of the Sharavathi hydel power project changed water flow patterns but also made the area more accessible. Over time, Jog became the flagship waterfall of Karnataka tourism, symbolising Malnad’s rain-soaked landscape and Shivamogga district’s natural heritage.
