Kalimath Temple (Shakti Peeth)

About this place

Kalimath Temple is at a quiet village and major Shakti shrine located on the banks of the Saraswati (a Mandakini tributary) in Rudraprayag district. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, but also houses shrines to Lakshmi and Saraswati, representing a powerful trinity of Devi energy. The complex lies amid fields and hills, giving a strong feeling of Shakti in the lap of nature rather than a busy bazaar town. Pilgrims come to offer prayers for protection, victory over negativity and fulfilment of desires, especially during Navratri when special rituals are held.

History & highlights

Kalimath is recognised as one of the 108 Shakti Peethas, and specifically as the only Shakti Peeth in the Kedarnath valley. According to legend, after Sati’s self-immolation, Vishnu cut her body into pieces; her back is believed to have fallen at Kalimath, making it a Siddha Peeth mentioned in Devi Bhagavata. Unlike many Kali temples, the main idol is not openly visible; instead, worship focuses on a silver plate and Sri Yantra, which is only fully exposed for special midnight puja on Ashtami during Navratri. This mysterious, esoteric style of worship and the village’s isolation have given Kalimath a reputation as one of the most spiritually intense sites in Garhwal.
