Kalo Dungar (Black Hill)

Kalo Dungar (Black Hill)

About this place

Kalo Dungar, or Black Hill, is the highest point in Kutch at about 462 m above sea level. From its viewpoint the White Rann and sky merge into a single pale band, especially on clear days, giving a dramatic “edge of the earth” feeling. A road takes you almost to the top, where you find the 400-year-old Dattatreya temple, small food stalls and platforms for viewing the sunset. The drive from Dhordo/Khavda is scenic, passing scrub forests and distant BSF posts. Kalo Dungar is also known for a gravity-hill style optical illusion where vehicles seem to roll uphill in neutral, which fascinates visitors.

History & highlights

Historically, Kalo Dungar served both as a spiritual site and a natural lookout over the Rann. Local legends say Lord Dattatreya fed starving jackals here, and the temple still offers rice prasad to jackals after evening aarti. Its border-adjacent location later made it important for surveillance; today there is an army post at the top and access is partly regulated. Tourism picked up after roads improved and Rann Utsav popularised the region, turning Kalo Dungar into a standard sunset stop on Kutch itineraries.
