Kamleshwar Dam is a large reservoir on the Hiran River inside Gir National Park, often called the “lifeline of Gir” because it helps sustain wildlife during dry months. The broad lake, surrounded by forested hills and rocky shores, is famous for mugger crocodiles, water birds and scenic sunset views. Safari routes often pass viewpoints where jeeps stop so travellers can photograph the dam, birdlife and sometimes distant lions or deer near the water’s edge. For Ghoomein, you can showcase Kamleshwar as the perfect “pause point” photo-stop inside Gir, ideal for reels with reflections, crocodile close-ups (shot from a safe distance!) and wide landscape shots.
About this place
History & highlights
The rock-fill Kamleshwar Dam (officially Hiran-I) was completed in 1959 for irrigation and water storage on the Hiran River in Visavadar, Junagadh district. As Gir was declared a sanctuary and later national park, the reservoir became integral to the protected area’s ecology, supporting aquatic life, crocodiles and serving as a key water source for lions and other wildlife. Today, besides its utilitarian role, it is known as one of Gir’s best-known internal attractions, regularly included in wildlife itineraries.
