Khajrana Ganesh Temple

About this place

Khajrana Ganesh Temple is Indore’s most famous Ganesh temple, with a large walled complex, towering shikharas and a beloved black-stone idol of Lord Ganesha richly decorated with silver, gold and flowers. On Wednesdays, Sankashti and Ganesh festival days, long queues of devotees bring laddoos, coconuts and modaks, seeking blessings for health, exams and business. The lane outside is lined with prasad and pooja shops, making it a lively devotional hub.

History & highlights

The original small shrine is believed to date to the 18th century, and local tradition associates its protection with Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, who is said to have hidden the idol during troubled times and later re-installed it. Over time, as Indore expanded, Khajrana grew from a village shrine to a major city temple. Continuous donations from devotees have funded expansions, gold/silver ornaments and facilities, turning it into one of the most visited Ganesh temples in central India.
