Kilkileshwar Mahadev Temple is a beautiful Shiva temple on the opposite bank of the Alaknanda River from Srinagar, in the Chauras area. From the temple courtyard you get wide views of the river, the town and the surrounding hills, so many visitors combine darshan with a quiet riverside walk. The temple is slightly away from the market area, so it feels peaceful and ideal for meditation or sitting by the ghats. Because of its riverbank setting and connection with Adi Shankaracharya, it is counted among the spiritually important stops of Srinagar Garhwal.
About this place
History & highlights
Sources say Kilkileshwar Mahadev was established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya during his Himalayan travels, when he was reviving Sanatan Dharma and founding monasteries across India. Over centuries the temple served as a local tirtha for nearby villages and later for students and teachers once the HNB Garhwal University campus came up in Chauras. The sanctum houses a Shiva-linga believed to be very ancient. Due to repeated floods of the Alaknanda, the riverfront has changed many times, but the temple continues to stand as a reminder of Srinagar’s long association with Shaiva worship and Shankaracharya’s route towards Badrinath.
