Kirti Mandir (Gandhi’s Birthplace)

About this place

Kirti Mandir is the most important place in Porbandar – the ancestral house where Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869, now preserved as a national memorial. The original three-storey haveli has narrow corridors, wooden balconies and rooms arranged around an inner courtyard, giving a sense of a 19th-century merchant home. A small plaque marks the exact room of Gandhi’s birth. Next to it stands a temple-style memorial building with photos, exhibits, quotes and a peaceful prayer hall dedicated to Gandhi and Kasturba. For Ghoomein, this is your headline attraction: a must-visit for anyone following India’s freedom history, perfect for educational reels, heritage shots and “walk through Bapu’s home” style content.

History & highlights

Kirti Mandir was Gandhi’s ancestral house, owned by his great-grandfather and later his father Karamchand Gandhi (Diwan of Porbandar). The haveli was acquired and restored by local citizens and Gandhians in the early 20th century; after Independence, it was further developed with the adjoining temple-like memorial, inaugurated in 1950s as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba. Today it is managed as a protected memorial and draws visitors from across India and abroad, forming the core of Porbandar’s identity as “Gandhi’s birthplace city.”
