Koteshwar Mahadev Temple

Koteshwar Mahadev Temple

About this place

Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is a cave-shrine located about 3 km from Rudraprayag town, slightly above the Alaknanda river. The temple is tucked into a rock face, with steps leading down from the road to a series of small caves and shrines. Inside, natural rock formations and dripping water frame the Shiva lingam, while outside you get impressive views of the fast-flowing Alaknanda. The atmosphere is intimate and meditative, far quieter than the big yatra centres, making it a favourite stop for devotees who want to sit in silence close to the river.

History & highlights

Local belief holds that Lord Shiva meditated at Koteshwar on his way to Kedarnath, pausing here while hiding from the demon Bhasmasura, who had obtained a boon that allowed him to turn anyone to ash by touching their head. The cave site is therefore considered very ancient, though its exact construction date is unknown. Over time, steps, small shrines and a temple structure were added to support worshippers. Today, alongside regular puja and Mahashivratri celebrations, Koteshwar also hosts a charitable hospital run by a religious trust, blending spiritual service with practical healthcare for rural communities—very much in the spirit of Shiva as protector and healer of the region.
