Kufri

About this place

Kufri is a small hill station in Shimla district, about 12–20 km from the city depending on the route, located on the historic Hindustan–Tibet road (NH-5). At around 2,500 m altitude, it is famous for winter snow, skiing slopes, pony rides to Mahasu Peak, Himalayan Nature Park and wide views of surrounding mountains. In summer, tourists visit for cool weather, adventure activities and as a starting point for treks towards Fagu and beyond. Kufri, along with Chail and Shimla, forms the popular “Golden Triangle” of Himachal tourism and is often included as a standard side trip in Shimla itineraries.

History & highlights

The name “Kufri” comes from “kufr”, meaning “lake” in the local language, hinting at older geographical features or local legends. For a long time Kufri was a quiet village on the trade route towards Tibet; the Hindustan–Tibet road, begun in the 19th century, passed through this area, bringing traders and officials. With the rise of Shimla as a major hill station and later the capital of Himachal, Kufri slowly transformed into a resort extension of the city. In post-Independence decades, winter sports festivals, tourist facilities and adventure parks were introduced, rebranding Kufri from a simple transit village to a snow-and-adventure hub linked to Shimla’s tourism economy.
