Taj Lake Palace (Lake Palace)

Taj Lake Palace (Lake Palace)

About this place

The Taj Lake Palace looks like a white marble ship floating in the middle of Lake Pichola. From the city, you see low white walls, domes, chhatris and courtyards rising directly from the water, with boats ferrying guests across. Inside, it’s a maze of inner courtyards, pools, colonnades and richly decorated suites. Today it operates as the Taj Lake Palace – one of India’s most famous luxury hotels – and is often used in films, weddings and high-end campaigns, giving Udaipur its reputation as a royal romantic destination. At night, when lit up, the palace glows like a jewel on the lake.

History & highlights

The palace was built in 1746 on the natural rock island of Jag Niwas by Maharana Jagat Singh II of Mewar as a summer retreat and pleasure palace, away from the heat and dust of the main city. For centuries, it hosted royal gatherings and important guests. After independence and the decline of princely incomes, the building deteriorated until it was converted into a hotel in the 1960s–70s. Featuring in films like the James Bond movie “Octopussy” and countless travel features, the Lake Palace has since become an international icon of Udaipur, symbolising the transformation of royal residences into luxury heritage hotels.
