Maa Sharda Devi Temple.Maihar, in Satna district, is famous for the hilltop shrine of Maa Sharda Devi, reached by a long flight of steps (and now also by ropeway). From the top you get wide views of surrounding plains and villages. The temple courtyard is busy with devotees offering coconuts, bangles and prasad to the goddess, and Navratri sees especially large crowds and mela-like atmosphere. The small town at the base is filled with prasad shops, dharamshalas and pilgrims.
About this place
History & highlights
The Sharda Devi shrine is considered very ancient and is revered as a powerful Shaktipeeth in central India. Over centuries, local rulers and devotees added structures, courtyards and steps, gradually turning a hill shrine into a major regional pilgrimage centre. Maihar is also famous in Indian classical music because of Baba Allauddin Khan, founder of the Maihar gharana, who served as court musician here and trained greats like Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan. Thus, Maihar combines spiritual importance (Maa Sharda) with a rich musical heritage linked to its princely past.
