Mahabaleshwar Temple is a prominent coastal Shiva temple in Gokarna, close to the beach. Narrow streets lined with lodges and shops lead to the stone temple complex, where pilgrims perform rituals and take a dip in the sea. The atmosphere blends a small-town coastal market with intense Shaivite devotion.
About this place
History & highlights
Gokarna is considered an ancient Shaivite tirtha, with legends linking it to the story of Ravana and the Atmalinga of Shiva. The Mahabaleshwar Temple has been revered for centuries by pilgrims from Karnataka and beyond. Dynasties such as the Vijayanagara rulers and local chiefs patronised the shrine. In recent decades, Gokarna also became a backpacker and beach destination, so the old temple town now coexists with a yoga-and-beach tourism scene, both centred on the same coastline.
