Mahaparinirvana Temple

Mahaparinirvana Temple

About this place

Mahaparinirvana Temple in Kushinagar is a serene Buddhist pilgrimage site centred around a long reclining statue of the Buddha, representing his final passing (Mahaparinirvana). The temple stands amid lawns, trees and monastic ruins, creating a calm, meditative atmosphere. Pilgrims from many Buddhist countries visit to offer prayers, circumambulate the stupa and spend time in reflection, often as part of the broader Buddhist circuit in north India.

History & highlights

Kushinagar is traditionally regarded as the place where Gautama Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana after his final illness. Ancient stupas and monasteries grew up here to mark the event, and over centuries the site attracted monks and pilgrims. However, like many Buddhist centres in India, it declined after the 12th century. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, archaeological excavations by the British and later Indian teams uncovered important remains, including the reclining Buddha statue and the ruins of the original temple and stupa. Modern reconstruction and international patronage have since revived Kushinagar as a key global Buddhist destination.
