Maithon Dam

About this place

Maithon Dam, on the Barakar River, is surrounded by hilly terrain and is known for its vast reservoir, boating, small islands and picnic spots. The atmosphere is especially pleasant in winter and post-monsoon, with cool breeze and wide views of water and distant hills. Many visitors from Dhanbad and neighbouring districts treat Maithon as a lakeside getaway from the coalfields and city dust.

History & highlights

The dam was built in the 1950s–60s as part of the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) scheme to control floods and generate hydroelectric power in the Damodar–Barakar basin, which had been flood-prone and heavily mined. It was one of independent India’s early multi-purpose river valley projects. As the reservoir filled and roads improved, Maithon gradually became a tourist and weekend destination, in addition to its key role in flood control and power supply for the industrial belt of Dhanbad–Bokaro–Asansol.
