About this place
History & highlights
Built by King Lalitaditya Muktapida of the Karkota dynasty (8th century CE), it was one of the most important temples of ancient Kashmir dedicated to Surya. The temple was later destroyed, but its ruins became a key archaeological and cultural symbol, often called the “Shakti Peeth of architecture” in Kashmir.
