Mughal Gardens – Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh

About this place

Along the lake’s edge lie the famous terraced Mughal gardens – Shalimar and Nishat. Both combine stepped lawns, chinar trees, water channels, fountains and pavilions, laid out in the classic Persian-inspired char-bagh style. They are popular for picnics, evening strolls, and panoramic views of Dal Lake and the Zabarwan range.

History & highlights

The gardens were created in the early 17th century when the Mughal emperors used Kashmir as their summer retreat. Jahangir ordered the construction of Shalimar Bagh for his queen Nur Jahan, and Nishat Bagh was built by her brother. They symbolised imperial luxury – a slice of “paradise garden” on earth. After the decline of Mughal power, Dogra rulers maintained them, and today they are protected heritage sites and key stops on any Srinagar tour.
