Mumba Devi Temple.Compact yet highly revered temple in the crowded Bhuleshwar market area, dedicated to Mumba Devi, a local form of the Mother Goddess and patron of the Koli fishing communities. Surrounded by jewellery, textile and utensil shops, it’s a key spiritual stop in old South Mumbai and symbolically honours the “goddess of the city.”
About this place
History & highlights
An earlier temple near Bori Bunder is believed to date back to the 17th century; after its destruction, a new shrine was built at Bhuleshwar, which is the present Mumba Devi Temple. The city’s name “Mumbai” comes from this goddess (Mumba + Aai). Even as South Mumbai modernised, the temple has remained a living place of worship and an important reminder of the city’s Koli and goddess-centric origins.
