Murudeshwar Temple and Giant Shiva Statue,Murudeshwar is famous for its beachside temple and enormous statue of Lord Shiva seated on a hillock facing the sea. The temple tower (gopuram) is very tall and has a lift for panoramic views. Waves crash below the rocky promontory, and the combination of statue, gopuram and Arabian Sea makes for dramatic photographs and a strong devotional atmosphere.
About this place
History & highlights
The original shrine to Murudeshwara (a form of Shiva) has ancient roots in local legends linked to the Atmalinga story also associated with Gokarna. The modern massive statue and towering gopuram, however, were constructed in the late 20th–early 21st centuries with support from local patrons and business families. This large-scale redevelopment turned a relatively modest coastal temple into a major pilgrimage and photo-icon spot on the Karnataka coast, drawing bus tours and pilgrims from across India.
