Mussoorie Lake

Mussoorie Lake

About this place

Mussoorie Lake is a man-made lake situated on the Dehradun–Mussoorie highway, a few kilometres before you reach the main town. Developed as a picnic spot, it features paddle boats, small eateries, viewpoint platforms and photo spots overlooking the Doon valley and nearby villages. On weekends and holidays, families stop here on their way up to Mussoorie to take a short boat ride and enjoy the open views.

History & highlights

Mussoorie Lake did not exist naturally; it was created in the late 20th century by the City Board and Mussoorie–Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA). Sources note that it was developed around 1989–1994, by damming and filling a natural depression with water from a nearby stream, then adding basic landscaping, boating facilities and shops.

The aim was to provide a new picnic spot and to manage tourist flow by offering an attraction before people entered the already congested hill town. Over time, issues of maintenance and mismanagement—garbage, water quality, haphazard kiosks—have been raised by locals, but the lake continues to be advertised as a convenient, family-friendly stop that gives travellers a first taste of hills and valley views before they climb further up to Mussoorie.
