Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas Palace)

About this place

Mysore Palace is a grand royal residence with domes, arches, stained glass and lavish interiors. By day it impresses with its courtyards, durbar halls and intricate ceilings; by night, thousands of bulbs outline the palace in golden light, creating an unforgettable view. Inside, visitors see royal artefacts, paintings and the ornate marriage hall, making it the main symbol of Mysuru’s regal past.

History & highlights

After an older wooden palace burned down in the late 19th century, the present structure was completed in the early 1900s for the Wodeyar rulers of the Mysore kingdom. Designed by a British architect in Indo-Saracenic style, it blended Indian, Islamic and European elements. Mysuru was a powerful princely state under both pre-colonial and British times, and the palace was its political and cultural centre. Today, it is central to Dasara celebrations and stands as one of India’s most famous royal monuments.
