Nag Devta Temple, Kimadi

About this place

Nag Devta Temple at Kimadi on the Old Mussoorie Road is a hilltop shrine dedicated to the serpent deity, revered as a powerful protector of the region. Surrounded by dense forest and valley views, the temple feels very peaceful and rustic compared to city temples. Devotees drive or trek up via the winding Kimadi road and then climb steps to reach the main shrine, where a traditional stone idol of Nag Devta is worshipped with milk, flowers and bilva leaves. The area is popular for short treks and bike rides from Dehradun; many visitors combine darshan with enjoying the cool air, pine trees and wide views towards Mussoorie and the Doon valley. On Nag Panchami and local festivals, villagers organise special puja and bhandara, and the temple becomes the spiritual focus of the entire valley.

History & highlights

Local oral tradition says the Nag Devta shrine at Kimadi is over 400–500 years old. Elders recount that when people first began settling and farming here, they frequently encountered snakes while digging the land. Fearing conflict with the nagas, villagers prayed for protection; a serpent deity appeared in dreams and visions, after which a small stone shrine was established. Over time this grew into a siddh peeth of Nag Devta, with a more formal temple structure built as faith increased. Because the route links Dehradun and Mussoorie, travellers historically stopped here to seek protection from landslides, wild animals and accidents in the hills. Even today, many local drivers honk, bow or briefly halt near the temple when passing, keeping alive the old belief that Nag Devta guards the road and the surrounding villages.
